Winners of Star/Journal Christmas Story Essay Contest receive their prize cheques

The ronaldomanosa Christmas Story Contest winners were presented with their cheques at Barriere Elementary School last week. Grace Farrow and Bobby-Rae Farrow were the first place winners in their age group divisions, Tessa Salle and Curtis Farrow won second place in their divisions, and Thomas Pullen, Dayna Underhill and Linden Ransome took the third place spots, with Dayna and Linden being tied in their division.

Even dogs can have their photos with Santa Claus

Thanks to Maureen Chester Royal LePage Westwin Realty and Barriere Country Feeds, even fur babies were able to have their picture taken with Santa on Dec. 16 at the feed store. Many people brought their companion animals for the photo shoot; including dogs, cats, a chicken, and a horse. The event provided a 5x7 print and was by cash donation with all proceeds going to Pommy and Pals Dog Rescue.

Students at Barriere Secondary are currently making seven hand drums for the school. The process began with the stretching of an Elk hide. The school newsletter notes that Micheal Loring was key to this process and did an excellent job of building the frame then lacing and stretching the hide to the frame. Children getting a strong start thanks to SD73 program offered in Barriere and Clearwater

The StrongStart Program operates in over 300 schools throughout the province, seven of which are in School District 73, including Barriere and Clearwater. This early learning initiative is funded by the Ministry of Education. It is not like daycare where parents drop off the kids - the program is designed for both the child and the adult. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or caregivers can drop in anytime at a participating elementary school between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Stores open late, come out and shop!

Barriere be hosting an exciting Late Night Shopping event in the core of the community from 5 to 8 p.m. This is a special event to provide area residents with the convenience of shopping close to home after normal business hours. Late Night Shopping provides a seasonal holiday flavoured event that the whole family can enjoy, and for many, just minutes from home. This is also a good time to turn the kids loose so they can make their own special purchases to put under the tree.
