Coaches recognized by B.C. School Sports

Michelle Nederlof (Duncan Christian School) and Jill Fougner (Brentwood College) are the recipients of two B.C. School Sports major awards for 2025. Both will receive their awards at a BCSS awards dinner in Kelowna on the weekend of May 9.

Nederlof will receive the Women in Sport & Leadership award.

The Women in Sport & Leadership Award is to recognize the service and leadership of women in school sports. The recipient is a role model to colleagues and student athletes alike. The recipient has made a tangible impact on school sport and has demonstrated commitment to their student-athletes, their school, and their sport.

Foughner will be recognized with the Citation of Excellence in Coaching award.

The Citation of Excellence in Coaching recognizes outstanding coaches and their distinguished contributions to their sport and athletes. The recipient of this award guides student athletes to success through the philosophy of fair play and sportsmanship for a sustained period, while displaying values consistent with BCSS and school sport.

Hockey standouts make Team BC at NAHC

The 2025 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships will take place on the traditional territories of Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc in Kamloops May 4-11 and will feature two players with ties to the Cowichan Valley.

Shawnigan Lake School’s Easton Sangris and Crofton’s Wyatt Blace will suit up for Team BC.

Born in Comox, Sangris, 17, plays for Shawnigan Lake School’s U18 prep team as a forward. Blace, 18, is a forward with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL.

Duncan bowler to compete at nationals

The Bantam boys Gold medallist from our provincial tournament has declined the opportunity to represent B.C. at the Nationals May 15-18 in Quebec City. His spot now falls to silver medallist Ronin Frehlick of Duncan Lanes. Frehlick will now join senior boy David Swailes from Splitsville Nanaimo and senior girl Jordan Singer also from Splitsville to have three Mid Vancouver Island Tenpin Association members representing B.C. at the National Championships.

MacDowell's Tropical 7s crews see mixed results

Teams with the MacDowell Rugby Academy recently returned from the Topical 7s with three medals.

Of the eight MacDowell teams, including 115 athletes and 35 staff that went to the Tampa, Florida-based international rugby tournament, the elite women were the only ones that returned as champions, going undefeated in six games to secure their second title in as many years. The U16 girls won silver, falling only to Victoria's Crimson Tide in the final, and the U14 girls earned bronze, winning four of their six games.

The U16 boys elite and open teams and the U18 girls elite and open teams also competed as well as a U18 boys team.
