Barriere Senior Girls Cougars take third in tough championship

The Barriere Senior Girls Cougars took third place after a hard fought Okanagan Valley Championship from Feb. 13 - 15 in Salmon Arm.

The Barriere Secondary (BSS) Senior Girls Cougars rallied hard to place third in the Senior ‘A’ Basketball Okanagan Valley Championships over the weekend on February 13 through 15 at King’s Christian School in Salmon Arm.

Coach Angie Rainer said, “BSS played Princeton Secondary our first game and won 79-25. Missy Kjellstrom received Player of the Game and the second game we played Aberdeen Hall and needed to win this game to move on to provincials. Unfortunately, we lost the game 48-31, the girls played a great game right until the end. Lexy Kerslake received the Heart and Hustle award from the game.”

During the third game of the championships BSS played Kamloops School of the Arts (KSA), it was a “close game all the way to the last minute” said coach Rainer. BSS won the game 51-42 with Joy Rainer receiving the Player of the Game.

The fourth and final game was played for third and fourth place. Barriere played against Immaculata Secondary School. “BSS was behind after the first half 19-27. The team played an excellent third quarter and was winning 42-34 going into the fourth. The Senior Girls finish strong with nine baskets to their Immaculata's three. BSS Senior Girls won 59-39, placing them third in the Senior Girls ‘A’ Basketball Okanagan Valley Championships. Lexy Kerslake received Player of the game,” said coach Rainer.

The BSS coach added, “King's Christian School hosted a great tournament, supplying each team with snacks and places to rest, choosing the Player of the Games, they received t-shirts, which went to the winning team and Heart and Hustle, received a Gatorade, which went to the losing team,” she said, adding, “The Barriere Sr girls would like to thank their parents, family, friends and community for supporting them all season. Congratulations to our Grade 12 graduates Jade Todd, Isabella MacDougal, Sitarah Buksh and Jesimae Harrison.”
