Ever wonder where the luxury cashmere wool comes from?
Come to BC Ag Expo at the North Thompson Agriplex from Sept. 21 to 23 to find out!
The Canadian Cashmere Producers Association will be holding the Canadian National Cashmere Fleece Competition (CNCFC) at BC Ag Expo this year.
Jayne Deardorff will conduct the fleece judging on Sept. 23.
There will be fleece on display and spinning demonstrations throughout the weekend.
Cashmere is the undercoat of goats, with the largest quantities coming from cashmere goats. The wool is very fine with a diameter of 19 microns or less (a human hair is 90 microns).
The goat’s undercoat starts growing on the longest day of the year and from January to March is ready to be combed out into a fleece which is then spun, usually into a lace weigh yarn.
This soft and extremely warm wool comes in many lovely colours. Come and see this fascinating part of our agriculture world.
Admission to BC Ag Expo is free, and while you are there check out the 4-H and Open shows and displays in Beef, Sheep, Goat, Horse, Dog, Rabbit and Photography.
If you are interested in purchasing a beef, lamb or goat for your freezer or a lovely photo for your home, don’t miss the live auction which will take place Monday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. at the North Thompson Agriplex.
