Unmarked RCMP truck one of two vehicles involved in Hwy. 5 incident

RCMP have confirmed that police truck was not involved in a pursuit at the time of the incident

Update Sunday May 11, 2025 1:10 p.m.

RCMP confirm that an unmarked BC Highway Patrol vehicle was involved in a two-vehicle incident on Hwy. 5 north of Kamloops on Saturday (May 10).

Police told Black Press that there is no evidence to suggest the police vehicle was involved in a pursuit, and that the exact circumstances of the incident are still being investigated.

According to a statement from police, the collision happened on May 10 at 8:32 a.m. when an unmarked grey police pickup and a blue Ford Ranger pickup were both northbound on Hwy. 5 just south of Rayleigh, near Kamloops.

"Police have spoken to multiple witnesses and collected multiple dash-camera videos, but we need to be thorough, and we would welcome more witnesses,” says Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “The investigation is in its early stages but there are no obvious indications of criminality to this point.”

McLaughlin reports that the police officer, along with the 21-year-old Maple Ridge woman who was driving the other vehicle and a 19-year-old Maple Ridge woman who was a passenger, were all taken to hospital as a precaution. Both vehicles were badly damaged, and highway traffic was impeded for approximately nine hours for investigation and clean up.

Police are asking witnesses who may have seen the collision occur (including the minutes leading up to the crash), or those who may have dash camera video, to please call BC Highway Patrol - Kamloops at 250-828-3111 and quote file number 2100 2025-1361.
