District of Barriere council and staff say they are looking forward to this new year and the projects they will be embracing, and Barriere CAO Bob Payette advises work is currently underway to finalize the district’s 2022 budget and capital projects list for 2022.
“Barriere can look forward to more upgrades in the Fadear and Community Parks, and we are all looking forward to getting the new water well up and running this spring,” said Payette in an interview on Jan. 14, “Our 2022 building permits are starting to come into the office, and I believe that we will see another busy construction season this year.”
A major project now on the horizon for Barriere, will be the upgrading of the sewer main, sewer plant and septic receiving station in the downtown core.
“This project needs to be grant supported from the federal and provincial governments,” explained Payette, “All efforts are being taken to get this grant application in by the end of January, and we continue to lobby the decision makers on the importance of this project for our growing town.”
He notes council’s agenda this past week included the importance of the Lower North Thompson Community Forest Society, “and how this community forest benefits and contributes to the success of Barriere and the region”.
“We are encouraging residents to visit our website and review the presentations from our local industry representatives, and our Mayor’s letters to higher levels of government as we continue to educate the decision makers on the value and importance of our local forest industry for Barriere,” said Payette.
The CAO noted the extended cold temperatures experienced the end of December and first part of January proved to be somewhat of a challenge for both residents and district staffers due to the number of days involved.
“I personally want to send a shout out to the outdoor staff and contractors,” said Payette, “And especially to all those residents that pitched in and worked hard to keep the roads, garbage and pathways, and outdoor arena clear during the cold snap.”
