Barriere memorial basketball game honours Simpc teen

Kiera Eustache hopes the Myles Memorial Basketball Game will become an annual event

The communities of Barriere and Simpcw First Nation held a memorial basketball game Wednesday, June 11 at Barriere Secondary School to honour the late Myles Martens, who lost his life on June 9, 2024.

Myles was a Simpcw member and played junior boys basketball, said Kiera Eustache a senior boys coach who helped organize the memorial game.

"We had current Grade 8 to 12 players participate and we also had alumni and coaches," she said. "We had about 36 players attend."

For the opening ceremony, Eustache and Ava Jules sang The Honour Song and were joined by Myles' cousin Thunder Camille for the Warrior Song.

Eustache framed Myles' #12 jersey and the players presented it to his mom, Cassandra who also threw the jump ball to start the game.

While she was coaching senior boys, Eustache said Myles had come up from junior boys to the senior boys bench to watch.

"He was also part of our spring season program," she said.

Eustache said she hopes the memorial game can become an annual event.
