During the festive season of Christmas and New Year, the old story is repeated—about the three very precious gifts which were bestowed on the holy newborn child over two thousand years ago. We understand the treasure of gold being very important along with the burning of incense as a holy ritual, but we might ask, what is the significance of myrrh? With its pain-numbing components, was myrrh really for the infant or was it for the mother? And, what made it so valuable?

Jesus’ message to the people was to seek not merely for material benefit, making that their chief effort, but rather to seek for heavenly wisdom first.

News of the miracle Jesus did in feeding the multitude spread far and wide bringing many searching for Jesus. But when they found out He was not setting up an earthly kingdom and freeing them from Rome’s rule, they turned away and joined the rabbis and priests in criticizing what Jesus was teaching of a heavenly kingdom of changed hearts and minds.
