The U.S. flag is typically flown in Sidney from May to October alongside the Union Jack, the provincial flag and the Town of Sidney flag.

This is a follow-up to Alexis Thuillier’s letter about some councillors voting to fly the U.S. flag in Sidney

Coun. Sara Duncan’s speech on why Sidney should fly the U.S. flag (hear it for yourself on a recording of a council meeting) sounded brilliant until you realize the nonsense she was using as accurate information. It seems Ms. Duncan thinks politicians arrive at their jobs by magic. No councillor, you and Donald Trump had to be voted in, and believe it or not, you can be voted out. President Trump can also be put in line if the people of the U.S. do not like what he is doing.

If your reasoning was correct and we need to fly the U.S. flag to make Americans feel welcome, then perhaps we should fly all the flags of all the countries from where we have visitors. We could look like the United Nations. The people of Sidney are the ones welcoming outsiders regardless of the country they come from.  We are Canadians and value our freedom and flag. Where in the U.S. have you seen the Canadian flag flying (before Donald Trump’s days)?  Also, Mariners Plaza should take note and take down the U.S. flag.

Before people start using the “Well, you don’t have people in the U.S. you care about” argument, I will set you straight. My father’s people came from Britain to the U.S. in the late 1600s, and he was born in Michigan and raised in Florida. He came to Canada in his teens and refused to move back to the U.S. I have many cousins and friends, as well as my best friend and previous associates who live in the U.S.

Ms. Thuillier, when you get your organization created, please call me. I’d like to join – I’m in the book.
