Barriere Firefighters and First responders completed a 10km Walk For Cancer in the community on Oct. 26, 2020, to raise funds for Cancer research. Pictured are two of the firefighters participating in the 2020 Walk wearing full gear weighing in at 80 to 100 pounds. (ronaldomanosa photo)

The mission statement of the non-profit Barriere Firefighters Association is “to further support and strengthen the Barriere Fire Department and to help in enhancing fire education and public safety/awareness to the community of Barriere. And to give something to the community beyond emergency services and to also achieve a level of excellence in service that will be obvious to every person that comes into contact with both our organization and our fire department.”

To this end the Barriere Firefighters Association is currently accepting cash donations towards their annual Barriere Firefighters Walk that will be taking place within the community on Sunday, April 10, at 10 a.m.

The Firefighter’s Walk requires local firefighters dressed in full firefighting gear to walk a 10 km route around the community of Barriere.

‘Full gear’ means the dry weight of a firefighter’s full fire PPE (personal protective equipment) is about 60lbs. If attending a fire, this weight can easily reach 80lbs due to the gear soaking up large amounts of water and sweat. The gear (plus the fire hose), as shown in the attached photo weighed roughly 100lbs.

Organizers say the goal is to raise $5,000 in donations which will definitely benefit the community as a whole. Proceeds raised from the event will be distributed this year with 75 per cent going to the Barriere Food Bank Society and 25 per cent to the Barriere Firefighters Association.

Members of the public are invited not only to donate, but to also walk with the firefighters as they complete their 10 km trek.
