Crowd goes crazy for music at Coal Miner Days

A playlist of iconic hits got everyone grooving and moving

Sparwood played decades of music hits at Coal Miner Days, June 9 to 15.

This year's theme "Music Mania," brought the community together to bond over their favourite songs. Parade floats played all genres of music, from classic rock to 80s disco, and people dressed up as their favourite music artists or in costumes reminiscent of their favourite decade of music.

Hit tracks from Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry played from TriXtan's DJ booth during events at the Recreation Centre on Saturday, June 14.

There were a few new and noteworthy events this year on Saturday.

The Escape Room was a popular attraction. People lined up in groups to try their hand at solving puzzles in two interactive rooms, Tomb of the Pharaoh and the Sunken Submarine. One transported participants to an ancient Egyptian tomb, and the other was a challenge to help a submerged submarine reach the surface of the water before the clock ran out of time.

Attendees tried their hand at axe throwing, and a few people nearly hit a bullseye on the target board. This challenging activity requires the perfect combination of strength, balance and agility.

TriXtan Entertainment ran an Olympics for youth ages five to 12, with activities like hula hooping, paper air plane throwing, crab-walking, sack racing and ball and spoon racing. Calgary-based host Tristan Trixtan has worked as a magician for 25 years, and his company runs many different kinds of shows including acrobatics and trapeze.
