West Nile virus risk increases as the summer heats up

As summer temperatures increase, so does the risk of West Nile virus. The risk of getting West Nile virus is highest from the end of July through August. There are some important measures people can take to reduce their risk of infection. West Nile virus is a disease that is spread from infected corvid birds (crows, ravens, magpies, and jays) to humans through mosquito bites. It was first detected in B.C. in the South Okanagan during the summer of 2009.

KAMLOOPS - As a result of recent precipitation, cooler temperatures and a moderate fire danger rating in northern portions of the Kamloops Fire Centre, BC Parks - in consultation with the BC Wildfire Service - will re-open Wells Gray Provincial Park to public use as of 7 a.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

Air quality and health could be impacted by smoky skies

Residents in communities across Interior Health affected by fires burning and resulting smoky skies should be aware that smoke conditions and local air quality can change due to the unpredictable nature of fires. Some individuals may be more sensitive to the effects of smoke from forest fires, such as those with heart or lung conditions. These individuals should watch for any change in symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure.

Show & Shine glistens all the way to success

The Barriere Park Show & Shine 2017, Swap Meet, Automobile & Motorcycle Event held July 8 at Fadear Park in Barriere was not in the least deterred by the thick haze of smoke that hung in the valley from the numerous wildfires taking place within the Interior of B.C. Folks still turned out in force to check out the vehicles, vendors, swap meet items and enjoy the concessions on site.

Let’s Move dancers hold showcase at Bandshell

On Thursday, June 29, a group of Barriere dancers held a showcase at the Bandshell in Fadear Park to demonstrate their skills and dances that they had mastered over the previous eight weeks by taking classes at the Ridge with Let’s Move Studios. Four groups of dancers performed; little movers, acro, hip hop and ballet. Dancers and spectators enjoyed being entertained with games in between the performances. Classes are scheduled to start up again in the fall.
