Mother’s Day is traditionally the second Sunday in May in Canada, it is not a federal holiday, but is a popular day for many. This year Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 8, and it is a time to thank the special people in your life.
People in Canada express their gratitude towards mothers and mother figures on this day. Mother figures may include step-mothers, mothers-in-law, guardians (eg. foster parents), and family friends. It is the time for people to thank mothers and mother figures who took the time to care for them and help them through life’s challenges.
Some people give cards, flowers, or chocolates, and/or make handmade items or special meals on Mother’s Day. Others take their mothers or mother figures to the movies, a restaurant, café, or a day in a park. Some mothers and mother figures also receive special gifts such as jewelry, clothing, accessories, and gift vouchers for services or products.
M... is for the million things she gave me,
O... means only that she’s growing old,
T... is for the tears she shed to save me,
H... is for her heart of purest gold;
E... is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R... means right, and right she’ll always be.
Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER,”
A word that means the world to me.
Poem by Howard Johnson, 1915.
