Alleged axe-wielding man charged with assault in Surrey

ERT called in to help during Monday incident in Bridgeview neighbourhood

A 39-year-old man has been charged in connection with what police are describing as a "violent incident" in Surrey on Monday afternoon.

At around 2:45 p.m., Surrey Police Service (SPS) responded to a call on a property near 113b Avenue and 124 Street about a man who was allegedly breaking windows on a trailer with an axe and threatening residents.

When police arrived, the suspect entered a home on the same property. The Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team was called in to help, as front-line officers could not "convince the man" to leave the home, noted an SPS release.

The suspect and another resident came out of the house at around 6:30 p.m. and were taken into custody.

William Sumner has been charged with a count of assault with a weapon, two counts of uttering threats, and two counts of mischief over $5,000.

"Sumner was also arrested for two outstanding Surrey Police Service warrants for possession of a weapon while prohibited and possession of a firearm without a licence related to a March 29, 2025, SPS investigation," noted the release.

Sumner had his first court appearance on Tuesday (May 6). He remains in custody and is next scheduled to appear in Surrey provincial court on May 12.
