Admission is free at the eight outdoor swimming pools in Surrey this summer, starting May 12 at three of them.

First to open are pools at Bear Creek (13820 88 Ave.), Greenaway (17901 60 Ave.) and Sunnyside (15455 26 Ave.).

Weeks later, the Hjorth Road pool opens May 31 (at 10277 148 St.), followed by June 21 openings at Holly (10662 148 St.), Kwantlen (13035 104 Ave.), Port Kells (19340 88 Ave.) and Unwin (13313 68 Ave.).

Surrey’s spray parks will open for the summer on May 16.

At the outdoor swimming pools, admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis, with lane swimming available at some locations. Swim lessons from Lifesaving Society Swim for Life can be booked for a fee on tidesout.com.

Mayor Brenda Locke says that beyond being "a fantastic way to beat the heat and have fun," Surrey's outdoor pools "are important community hubs (that) provide a wonderful way for residents to stay active and, perhaps most importantly, to enjoy quality time with friends and family.

"In a time where expenses are increasing, these free outdoor pools are an invaluable way to stay cool, stay healthy, and stay connected this summer."
