So here we are, facing another fire season which seems to be something we’ve now just come to expect.
Something that is reassuring as we prepare ‘just in case’ is the incredible volunteers we see day and night, around the clock ready to go at a moment’s notice. These individuals and groups are dedicated to protecting, caring for and supporting their communities through their selfless service.
All these worthwhile organizations are in recruitment mode ongoing hoping to increase their team strength with capable new members.
It’s important to note the need for many different types of volunteer skills in all organizations. Even if you may feel that you physically are not suited for something within a first responder position, there are other skills that would be greatly appreciated by organizations such as administrative, event coordination, planning, fundraising, and grant application expertise.
Don’t discount your own skill sets due to age either. Remember what they say, with age comes great wisdom (slight chuckle here as I am now what is termed a ‘senior’ and don’t always feel quite so wise) but, your expertise and years of experience would be welcomed by many groups, organizations, and non-profits in our valley.
If you would like to feel valued, support your local community and contribute to something worthwhile, consider exploring the wide variety of service groups that meet on a regular basis and test the water by attending an informational meeting or three, or visit their social media page or website to research what might interest you and possibly be a good fit for your abilities and experience.
Volunteering can be so rewarding and in this vibrant valley we live in there are so many creative ways to be of service.
If you are a young person looking to build your resume, consider volunteering to add to your list. Employers can be quite impressed by youth who are willing to give their time and prioritize them when hiring.
As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t need a college degree to serve… You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
