It was a challenging year for the entire province last year. We discussed not running the 2017 tournament given the incredible devastation from the floods and fires that ran for months.
However, there was increasing interest to have the tourney, and to try to keep our dreams of helping youth alive. We were so impressed by how many of our sponsors truly stepped up and supported so many in need, and still were able to support us.
There were many past sponsors that were unable to donate due to their deep commitment to those in need throughout the province, with so many effected people ending up throughout the North Thompson and Kamloops. We thank all of those individuals, businesses and non-profit groups that gave so much last year; in most cases to those that they didn’t know who brought their animals and belongings.
We also want to recognize all the first responders that worked alongside each other to keep our citizens, their property and belongings as safe as possible in such a dynamic situation. Our coordination team worked the floods and fires right up to, and following, the golf tournament, which added a few more challenges. Again, everyone stepped up and others helped us out to make sure things went off without a hitch!
We did raise some significant funds to donate back this year with three bursaries paid out and over $4,000 to put back into the communities. We were going to hold over until this year but we have seen need right now so have decided to put out all that we can to support the groups this year and will work hard to keep our funding strong for the upcoming year.
We will be taking applications for youth programs and initiatives from now up to 4 p.m. on May 10, 2018.
You can drop off the applications for funding at the Barriere RCMP Detachment, Barriere Ambulance Station, PO Box 24, Barriere, B.C., V0E 1E0, or meet one of our coordinators in Barriere, Deb Stamer or Darin Underhill.
We will present the funding sometime the following week once a date and location can be confirmed.
We will also be contacting players and setting up the team lists for this year’s golf tournament, which is scheduled for Aug. 11, 2018, at the Chinook Cove Golf Course.
Registration will start on May 14, and be on a first come first serve basis with many new teams waiting for registration to start.
You can find all details for registration, tournament rules, updates and our sponsor list on the website at www.besgolf.com. If you have any questions at any time please email besgolf@gmail.com or call 250-299-1130.
Thank you to all our sponsors and your patronage for going above and beyond in such a time of need!
We look forward to another great year in support of our area youth, promoting healthy and inclusive choices for all.
