Students welcomed back to school at Barriere Elementary

Principal Brogan welcomes families, students and staff back to school in the first of his regular messages for the year

We are incredibly excited to welcome you and your children back for the 2024–2025 school year at Barriere Elementary, marking our 61st year of operation. This milestone reflects our school’s enduring commitment to excellence in education and the strong sense of community that we value so much.

This year, we are pleased to introduce several new staff members who will be joining our dedicated team: Ms. Kivari (Grades 3–4); Ms. Wheele (part-time teacher); Ms. Dearin (Thursday prep teacher); Ms. Raschke (Certified Education Assistant) and Ms. Tomson (Grades 3–4).

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to our new team members. We are confident they will bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm and expertise to our school community.

We are also excited to invite you to our Welcome Back PAC barbecue on Monday, Sept. 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the school parking lot. This event is a wonderful opportunity for families to reconnect, meet the staff and enjoy some great food. We hope to see you there.

Regarding our food program, we are aiming to have it up and running by mid-October. We’ll share more details as soon as we receive final approval for our grant proposal.

Important dates to remember: Professional Development Day on Monday, Sept. 23 (no school for students as our teachers engage in valuable professional learning) and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Monday, Sept. 30 (school will be closed as we observe this important day of reflection and learning).

Some other important dates you may want to mark on your calendar: Sept. 20 (Terry Fox Run); Oct. 1 (school picture day); Oct. 14 (Thanksgiving Day); Oct. 25 (In-service day; no school) and Nov. 4 (picture retakes).

Last year was a tremendous success and we’re eager to build on that momentum this year. Together we will continue to create a nurturing and dynamic learning environment for all our students.

I’d also like to remind you that our Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is always looking for new members. If you’re interested in getting involved, please check out our PAC Facebook page or reach out to our PAC president, Nikki Shewan. Your participation and support help shape the educational experience here at Barriere Elementary.

I’m committed to maintaining an open-door policy and welcome any questions, concerns or suggestions you may have. Please feel free to contact the school any time; I’m here to support you and your children. Visit our website at https://barriere-elem.sd73.bc.ca/en/index.aspx.

Wishing you all a fantastic and successful school year. I look forward to working together to make this year as memorable as the last.

Kindest regards, Mikel Brogan, Principal, Barriere Elementary School
