The Barriere Dairy Goat Show was held on May 25 and 26 in the goat barn at the North Thompson Fall Fair grounds.

The show is sanctioned by the Canadian Goat Society, (CGS) and also sponsored by the Thompson Okanagan Goat Association (TOGA). This year there were 107 entries and of those 33 were from 4-H.

“We had 88 goats on site. Yellowhead 4-H and Glen Valley 4-H sent 19 members, making for an incredible youth show and it was a wonderful two days,” said event organizer, Linda Carlson. “We will also be hosting the Canadian National West Goat Show in Barriere on July 5 - 6 in the North Thompson Fall Fair grounds agriplex.”

Vicki Maddocks is a 4-H mother who has two daughters that competed in this year’s goat show.

“During the first day, classification day on Saturday, the official classifier comes by and checks out whichever goats the breeders want to be classified and scores them against the breed standard for each goat,” she explained. “The following day is the actual goat show with 4-H classes being shown first and then open breed classes in the afternoon. These events are sanctioned by the Canadian Goat Society.”

Carlson summarized the hard work and dedication it takes to be involved in the goat show, “At the end of the show, human and goat competitors are tired. We are looking forward to the July show this summer here in Barriere.”
