Five of Barriere Secondary’s grade 11 students (Chant Copley, Will Dana, Isaiah Ducharme, Gerry-Lee Genier and Sheldon VanSickle) were given the opportunity, along with 21 other students from the district, to take part in the School District 73 Heavy Metal Rocks.  Heavy Metal Rocks is a program designed to provide on-the-job experience to students as they consider career options in the trades.

To prepare, the students received worksite safety training through the BC Construction Safety Alliance and they completed their Occupational First Aid, Level 1 and WHMIS Training certification outside of class time.  Through their preparation, the students learned the importance of proper training and qualifications required for life-long careers.

The Barriere Secondary (BSS) students found it exciting, fun and rewarding – especially when four of them were awarded $500 each.

Congratulations to the following BSS Grade 11 students; Sheldon VanSickle awarded Best Overall Student Operator, Isaiah Ducharme awarded the Pit Boss Award, Chant Copley awarded the Exemplary Safety Award, and Will Dana awarded the TRU Trades Entrance Scholarship.
