When you have so much ‘stuff’ in your head at the end of a long day sometimes it’s just hard to fall asleep. Being able to turn off the swirling news day, family, friend and life thoughts, and concerns of the jumble of this crazy old world shifting and changing day after day is a challenge.
I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve of experience that do help at times, not always but often. Years ago, when a much younger Momma I used to practice yoga with my kids, and without fail doing some deep breathing, moves like the lion and other fun, but calming poses would inevitably end up with my little yawning and heading to their bunks to fall asleep. Guests were often astonished when I would involve their kids too and be packing them out on their shoulder snoring away after an evening of visiting.
As we age our concerns deepen for our grown children, grandchildren, family, and friends. We think of the legacy we may leave behind, worry about this beautiful planet, and become increasingly disturbed by things like politics, climate and a plethora of issues, even when we rationally realize the best thing, we can do is take care of our own backyard in times like these.
So, I thought I’d share a few of my tricks, or you might say my evening rituals before my head hits the nice soft pillows, I have surrounding me each night. Things are creakier and it takes a bit of fluffing these days to get those just right, I can admit that. Comfort is important.
I have some leg and feet issues now, so I use a leg massager for 30 minutes nightly before bed while watching a lighthearted show, nothing too serious or reading a book for a bit. I have a huge thermal tumbler of ice water on my bedside table (yes more trips to the loo – but it sure has helped my legs) and the sound of my air purifier kind of masks the outside or inside noises.
I need the room cool and dark. As I lay my head down, I concentrate on my breathing. Slow and methodical. I visualize the smiles and faces of my family and then I go to my own little self-created, imaginary heavenly place where everything is lush, green, beautiful and peaceful. Sometimes I listen to ‘Calm’ the app and I choose nature sounds or water over most other sounds.
The place I created within my mind gets upgraded and improved upon and I think that’s better than any technology because my own imagination is key, and I am the creator of my own peaceful ‘island’ as I drift off.
Yes, there are times when a little melatonin or sleepy time tea comes into play, but the part that really feeds my soul is knowing that I have control and I can choose to end and start my day as peacefully and positively as possible. The ball is in my court, and I can either carry the stress, allowing it to consume me, or wrap myself in grace, serenity and gratitude.
Pretty much works well awake or asleep, wouldn’t you say?
A wise friend of mine puts her phone in the kitchen for the night to ensure a better night's rest. It would be fun to know what nighttime habits you have for a good nights rest.
