Barriere Outdoor Club gearing up for kids cross-country ski lessons

The Barriere Outdoor Club is anticipating more snow and getting trails ready for the start of cross-country skiing lessons to start for students in the area.

The Barriere Outdoor Club (BOC) continues to hope for more snow as they get ready to host Barriere students from Grade 7 starting on Jan. 23 for the season's first cross-country skiing lessons.

Each year the BOC members organize cross-country and snowshoe lessons for local students.

The BOC constructed a warming hut and built ski and snowshoe trails for many users up at Barriere Forks Park on East Lake Road, with many events and functions held there year around.

Some years ago the BOC partnered with Barriere High and Barriere Elementary schools to provide a ski and snowshoe program for the students.

"The program is now a regular part of the school’s curriculum and is a fun and wonderful way to bring seniors, adults and students together for a positive and educational outdoor experience," said the BOC vice-president, Mary MacLennan, adding, "Our trail, groomer, Steve Rainer was able to take the roller over the trails recently to pack the ski trails but we still need more snow to set the cross-country ski tracks."

The BOC is a non-profit organization operated by volunteers in Barriere with a mandate to provide outdoor recreation programs and facilities to local citizens and through fund raising and grant applications the club purchases sports gear, grooming equipment and pays for general maintenance in order to provide year-round outdoor programs in the community.
