Barriere Elementary School advise they are continuing to honour the families of the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc.
“We have a number of activities planned around National Indigenous Day on June 21,” says Principal Tiffany Hawkins, “We will be painting rocks orange and creating a display. We will also be adding orange flags to the fence and placing our handprints on the cement blocks outside of the parking lot.”
The principal adds the school is also planning a Bannock Fundraiser Run on Monday, June 28, which will have a format similar to their annual Terry Fox Run, with donations being collected for the week of June 21.
“Students will bring in a donation for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada,” says Hawkins, “All students will participate in the run and will run with their cohort.
“At the end of the run each student will receive a small piece of bannock.
“Community members are also welcome to join in the tribute. Paint a rock orange and drop it off at the school, colour a feather and add it to our display, place your handprint on the cement blocks, or add an orange flag to the fence. Hawkins adds there has been an excellent video created for parents and educators. In the video, Monique Gray Smith shares tips on both talking to children about Residential Schools, but also how to prepare yourself as the adult to have these conversations.
