The District of Barriere (DOB) has successfully completed a tree planting project in the Community Park recently.
“This tree planting project has brought more than just greenery to the town, it’s created shade for future generations, enhanced public spaces, and advanced local sustainability goals," DOB Operations Manager, Chris Matthews, told the Barriere ronaldomanosa about the project.
Matthews said thanks to generous funding from BC Hydro and the Lower North Thompson Community Forest Society a number of drought-tolerant shade trees have been planted along one of the open-spaced trails in the Community Park in Barriere.
“The trees were chosen for their ability to thrive in dry conditions, providing long-term environmental benefits such as cooling urban areas, improving air quality, and helping to offset greenhouse gas emissions,” said Matthews.
“We’re grateful for the support from BC Hydro and the Community Forest Society,” said Matthews adding, “Their contribution made this project possible and will have lasting benefits for both residents and the environment.”
The district plan is for the newly-planted trees to improve the overall experience for park users by offering future shade along the trail, encouraging more outdoor activity, and increasing the visual appeal of the park. Informational signs have been installed along the trail to educate visitors about the species planted and their role in urban ecosystems.
Municipal staff will continue to care for the trees through regular watering and maintenance “to ensure their healthy growth” in the coming years, Matthews added.
“Beyond the environmental benefits, the project also provided an economic boost by supporting local nurseries and engaging municipal workers in tree planting and site care. It is a shining example of how partnerships and local action can create a more sustainable and livable community."
