Increase in toxic drug deaths in Kelowna.

A recent increase in toxic drug deaths in Kelowna has Interior Health (IH) issuing an overdose alert.

According to the health authority, the current down/opioid supply is unpredictable in its makeup.

“These drugs often contain benzodiazepines and/or potent tranquillizers in addition to fentanyl and analogues,” stated IH.

This often means that there are different mechanisms of action and effects that amplify each other, contributing to a higher risk of overdoses and other complications.

The alert is in effect until May 16.

Get your drugs checked by calling or texting 250-869-7870. Drug checking is available in Kelowna from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday - Friday.
