Smell leads police to almost $30,000

Members from Central Interior Traffic Services and the Barriere Detachment were conducting a road check on Highway 5 in Barriere the evening of Friday, Jan. 7, which resulted in the location of bundles of cash estimated at nearly $30,000.

Bundles of cash totaling just under $30

Members from Central Interior Traffic Services and the Barriere Detachment were conducting a road check on Highway 5 in Barriere the evening of Friday, Jan. 7, which resulted in the location of bundles of cash estimated at nearly $30,000.

A lone male drove up to the check and officers immediately noted an odor of marijuana. He was arrested and quickly turned over about eight grams of marijuana bud.

Officers conducted a search of the vehicle subsequent to the arrest and found five bundles of cash in a backpack containing a total of $28,000. Another bundle containing $1,120 was located under the driver’s seat. A second bag of marijuana was located inside a compartment in the dash.

The driver, from Edmonton Alberta, faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime. The cash (totaling $29,120) could also be forfeited. He will appear in Kamloops court in May.
