Kamloops- Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, said last Monday that with NAFTA negotiations set to begin on Aug. 16, constituents still have an opportunity to share their views.

On May 18 the United States stated its intention to initiate negotiations with Canada and Mexico. The Canadian government is currently taking a broad consultation process with Canadians, inviting them to share their views on the renegotiation of NAFTA.

This includes individuals, businesses, experts, academics, civil society organizations and not-for-profit organizations, labour unions, provincial and municipal governments, indigenous peoples, students and youth.

Specifically, the government is interested in what aspects or elements of NAFTA have worked well and should remain as is and those that need change or improvement.

“As we head into these negotiations the Official Opposition will continue to ask about the Liberal government’s priorities, and will not hesitate to hold them accountable for their failures to protect Canadian jobs,” said McLeod.

“It’s imperative that the government remind American decision makers of the importance of the Canada-US trading relationship to both Canada’s and America’s prosperity,” concluded McLeod.
