Highway 5 reopened south of Barriere after vehicle incident

Update: DriveBC estimates the highway should reopen by 7 p.m.

Highway 5 is closed south of Barriere Tuesday afternoon, May 16 due to a motor vehicle incident.

The closure is at Fishtrap between Clough Road and Shook Road for 5.3 km (7 to 2 km south of Barriere).

An assessment in progress and there is currently no detour available.

Witnesses on scene note a vehicle went over the bank and that a medical helicopter responded along with emergency services.

Community leaders have been pushing for upgrades to the highway due to ongoing safety concerns and an increase in collisions in recent years.
