UPDATE: Pedestrian dies after being struck by vehicle in Barriere

A crash occurred on April 27 on Highway 5 between Barriere Town Road and Station Road closing the highway in both directions. Next update 6:30 p.m.

Update Monday, April 28

One person has died after being struck by a vehicle while walking in Barriere Sunday, April 27.

“RCMP were called at approximately 4:00 p.m. to a motor vehicle versus pedestrian at the area of Station Road and Highway 5,” Barriere RCMP detachment commander Cpl. Kyle Camalush told the Barriere Star/Journal on Monday, April 28.

“A male was struck by a vehicle heading northbound and was transported by BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) to Royal Inland Hospital with life threatening injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The incident is still under investigation.”

Cpl. Camalush reports that the driver of the vehicle remained on scene, cooperating with police immediately following the accident.
Highway 5 was closed between Barriere Town Road and Station road for several hours in both directions as the incident was investigated.

Update: Highway 5 reopened after it was cleared between Barriere Town Road and Station Road.

Drive BC updated the status of the highway at 8:48 p.m. on April 27 after an incident had closed the highway.

On Sunday, April 27 at approximately 4:30 p.m. a crash on Highway 5 between Barriere Town Road and Station Road has closed the highway in both directions and an accident investigation is underway. Officials are asking drivers to watch for emergency vehicles.
