Those wishing to provide input into policing strategies and priorities in Barriere still have time to do so.

Barriere RCMP Cpl. Kyle Camalush launched a public survey online April 1 which takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Responses are being collected anonymously and will be used for setting priorities for Barriere RCMP’s strategic plan, said Camalush.

The survey asks questions such as how frequently incidents occur in various areas around Barriere such as alcohol-related incidents, assaults, break and enters, intimate partner violence, drug-related incidents, mental health issues, online threats, school violence, thefts and youth loitering/intimidation.

The survey asks whether these incidents are on the increase or decrease and how at risk you may feel. It also asks which of those you believe should be prioritized for proactive police work.

Once complete, the strategic plan will outline the priorities, goals, and objectives that Barriere RCMP will be committed to in the coming years.

“I feel it’s important to work closely with the community in developing our strategic priorities,” said the detachment commander.

The survey will be available online from April 1 to 30.

Camalush has returned as detachment commander after previously serving three years as a constable in Barriere and said the Barriere RCMP enjoy a close, proactive relationship with the community.

“We need to hold onto that relationship really tight. We have to keep it close to our hearts.”

The survey is intended for residents from the communities surrounding Barriere and Simpcw First Nation.

For those who would like to voice their concerns in person, or who just want to stop in and say hello, the Barriere RCMP will also host a townhall meeting April 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Barriere Lions Hall.

Everyone is welcome at this event.

For any questions, comments or concerns please contact Cpl. Camalush at the Barriere RCMP detachment at 250-672-9918.
