The Trail RCMP provided a media update Friday morning after police responded to a report of a gun inside a truck at the Trail high school the previous day.
Frontline officers responded to a call about a firearm reportedly seen inside a vehicle parked in the lot of J.L. Crowe Secondary School on Thursday afternoon, shortly after 1:30 p.m.
Sgt. Mike Wicentowich confirmed that officers located the pick up and seized a black air rifle.
Officers spoke with a 17-year-old Fruitvale youth about the air rifle.
According to police, the teenager reported that he had forgotten it was inside the vehicle.
Wicentowich said the youth understood the perception of the incident and apologized.
The matter remains under investigation, though Wicentowich said no criminal charges are expected.
“We suspect that the air rifle may have ended up at an unsanctioned graduation event reportedly taking place tonight (June 13) in the Pend d’Oreille area,” he said.
“Officers will be monitoring this planned event and conducted patrols along the road leading to the alleged location.”
