A second wildfire was burning out of control within 30 kilometres northwest across Upper Arrow Lake from Nakusp, a day after a previous fire was controlled by crews, according to BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

This latest fire reported Wednesday morning, June 11, along Plant Creek near Recreation Sites and Trails BC's Mosquito Lake, was about 10 kilometres west of the blaze that burned out of control Monday and Tuesday, June 9 and 10.

The previous wildfire was an estimated 0.3 hectares in size and suspected to be human-caused, while this second fire was initially reported at around 0.6 hectares and identified as likely lightning-caused.

In B.C., about 70 per cent of wildfires are started by lightning, according to provincial data from previous fire seasons.

BCWS's latest update at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 14, reports that the fire is under control by crews and sitting at 1.6 hectares — the size of two football fields.

No area restrictions or evacuations were put in place.
