John “Zeke” Renaud: A steady presence with a global perspective versatile defenceman-forward brings “je ne sais quoi” to the Clearwater Hosers

When it comes to dedication and versatility, it’s hard to beat John Renaud, better known to his teammates as “Zeke.” Wearing jersey #19, Renaud primarily plays defence but is always ready to step into a forward role when needed. Currently hailing from Barriere, B.C., he’s been an integral part of the Clearwater Hosers for the past six years.

Early Inspirations and Hockey Roots: Renaud’s hockey journey started at the age of six on the outdoor rinks of Ottawa, Ontario. Inspired by his father, a devoted Montreal Canadians fan, he grew up admiring the legends Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr. “Gordie was all offence, and Bobby knew how to jump into the offensive play as needed,” Renaud explains, reflecting the dual skill set he now brings to the Hosers.

One of his most memorable experiences on the ice was playing senior hockey on Vancouver Island. “I made some lifelong friends there,” he recalls, emphasizing the camaraderie that has become a hallmark of his hockey career.

On the Ice: While many players have elaborate pre-game rituals, Renaud keeps it simple, arrive at the rink early to catch any last-minute announcements. His go-to warm-up song, however, is anything but mellow: “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC sets the tone for a hard-hitting performance.

A self-described two-way threat, Renaud’s game-day advice to himself is straightforward: “Try to stay standing” a nod to the physical demands of hockey. And if you’re unlucky enough to be on the opposing bench, you might hear his signature chirp as he skates by: “When are you guys bringing the real team to play?”

Off the Ice: When he’s not patrolling the blue line or filling in at forward, Renaud might be found “touring the province or working.” After a game, he treats himself to a BBQ tenderloin steak with a baked potato (sour cream mandatory) and seasoned veggies. He’s also been known to appreciate a hearty debate on the merits of pineapple on pizza. “Sure, why not?” he jokes.

As for the funniest member of the Hosers, Renaud points to “Dr. Bob,” whose one-liners are apparently legendary in the locker room. While he may enjoy a good laugh, fans might be surprised to learn Renaud is a career mining professional, having worked all over the globe, from Mongolia to Indonesia.

Rapid Fire Favourites

• NHL Team: Ottawa Senators (though Colorado Avalanche is a close second)

• Movie: The Expendables series

• TV Show: Ghosts

• Dream Destination: Portugal

• Favourite Food: BBQ’d steak

If Renaud had a superpower on the ice, he’d choose to skate like he did in his 30s, an era he recalls with a smile.

Hoser Pride: Renaud says his favourite part of being a Clearwater Hoser is “spending time with the guys” and offering that extra “je ne sais quoi” to the team. He sums up the squad as “accepting, resilient, and positive” - qualities that help define their over-the-hill-yet-still-standing energy.

If there were a karaoke night, don’t be surprised if Renaud picks a Chris Rea classic like “The Road to Hell” or “Fool (If You Think It’s Over).” When it comes to fan interaction, “The louder, the better,” he grins. Even boos from the opposing crowd get him fired up.

Looking Ahead: Whether he’s holding the blue line or jumping in as an extra forward, John “Zeke” Renaud is a player who brings both skill and a global perspective to the rink. His commitment to camaraderie, passion for the game, and no-nonsense approach make him a cornerstone of the Clearwater Hosers and someone fans love to cheer (or boo) every time he touches the puck.

Unfortunately for the Hosers, John is being called to play in Ontario and may have to be traded to some fortunate team in the east. We wish him the best of luck and thanks for the “je ne sais quoi”.  He is clearly “still in the game!”
