From June, a total of 75 electric-powered bikes and scooters will be available to book at 30 stations across Langford.

There will soon be a new way to zip through the streets of Langford.

Launching in June, BCAA’s Evolve E-Bike and E-Scooter Share program will offer Langford residents the option of a sustainable and flexible way to travel.

A total of 75 electric-powered bikes and scooters will be available to book at 30 stations across the city.

"As Langford continues to grow, so does the need for more innovative and flexible ways to commute," said Mayor Scott Goodmanson in a news release.

"Welcoming Evolve to Langford reflects our commitment to sustainable growth, improved transportation solutions, and meeting our climate change commitments, while making everyday commuting – whether it’s to work, school or local businesses – more accessible for residents."

Working in partnership with Evolve, the city will create a safe, rider-friendly system with slow zones and no-ride areas to support responsible use of the environmentally friendly modes of transport, which will have a maximum speed of 25 km/hr.

Riders aged 18 and over can sign up for the Evolve service via their smartphones, after which they will be able to locate, unlock and ride their vehicle of choice.

It will cost 35 cents per minute or $12.99 per hour – whichever is cheaper – with a $1.25 unlocking fee per trip.

BCAA members will be able to save 10 per cent, and a monthly membership is also available for $9.99, dropping the per-minute rate to 10 cents.

Evolve, created by BCAA, was awarded the contract for Langford's 'micromobility program' after a competitive process, the city said.

"We are thrilled to offer reliable, affordable and accessible transportation options for Langford residents and build on the success we’ve seen in Nanaimo, and in Courtenay and Comox over the past two years,” said Leanne Buhler, head of Evolve E-Bike and E-Scooter Share.

Also coming to the city this summer will be BCAA’s Evo Car Share program, launching the Langford Evo Car Share Home Zone. This will be in addition to the Victoria-area Home Zone, which, according to the City of Langford, currently has 175 vehicles available.
