February 1962, and both sides of Vernon's 30th Avenue are crammed with residents getting a good look at the Vernon Winter Carnival's float during the Carnival parade. Also in the picture is the old Royalite Gas Station, corner of 30th Avenue and 28th Street (R sign), and St. James Catholic Church (top right). The 2025 parade goes Saturday, Feb. 8, at 12 p.m. on 27th Street from 45th to 32nd avenues.

Everyone loves a parade!

And, of course, the 65th Vernon Winter Carnival kicks off today, Friday, Feb. 7, for 10 days of fun and frivolity.

That includes the annual parade and if you haven't heard by now, there is a major change to the route.

The parade begins, as always, at 12 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, and the route will go down 27th Street only, due to safety and other concerns.

The starting point is 45th Avenue, and the parade will make its way south on 27th Street to 32nd Avenue. That is the parade's end point.  The city will block of 32nd to 30th Avenues as a spot for parade floats to disembark, and people participating in the parade can be picked up in those blocks.

Today's history picture is from the 1962 parade – which we believe was heading east, or UP, 30th Avenue that year. It's a snap of the Vernon Winter Carnival float.

The picture, from the Museum and Archives of Vernon, also shows the historic Royalite Gas Station "R" sign, with the station located on the southern corner of 30th Avenue and 28th Street.

And, in the top right of the photo, is the iconic St. James Catholic Church.
