Barriere RCMP are investigating a fatal incident involving a side-by-side (SxS) vehicle that claimed the life of a local 15-year-old youth.
Cpl. Kyle Camalush, detachment commander of the Barriere RCMP, said "On June 9 at 4:30 p.m. front line officers arrived at the scene near the two-kilometre mark of the Darlington Creek Forest Service Road to find paramedics and bystanders providing medical attention."
Police learned that a side-by-side driven by a 15-year-old youth, who was carrying a passenger, had lost control of the vehicle, resulting in it overturning. The driver unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The passenger suffered minor injuries and was transported to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.
Initial evidence gathered at the scene suggests the youth was not wearing a seatbelt. The RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service continue to investigate the incident.
"This tragic event has had a significant impact on all communities surrounding Barriere," said Camalush. "The Barriere RCMP wish to send our condolences to the families and friends of those involved during this difficult time."
