Summertime, and the reading is easy, thanks to the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library's (TNRL) Summer Reading Club, which is back for another year to encourage readers of all ages to get lost in a good book.
The theme of this year's program is "World of Curiosities", with readers encouraged to explore the world of wonders at their fingertips in local libraries (including the Mobile Library, which is in Lytton and Spences Bridge every third Thursday starting on July 4, and at 70 Mile and Loon Lake every third Friday starting July 5).
The Summer Reading Club is completely free, packed with fun challenges and prizes, and has something for children, teens, and adults. Registration is now open for the program, which runs from July 1 through Aug. 24. No matter what your age, you can register and pick up a reading record at any TNRL library, or download a copy of the reading record online.
Children aged 0 to 12 are encouraged to read, or be read to, every day. They can read whatever they want, whenever they want, for however long they want: all reading counts, whether it's an audiobook, a graphic novel, a comic book, or a magazine. Every little bit helps, and the goal is to get children engaged with reading by making it fun.
For every seven days that a child reads, they earn a sticker and an entry into the grand prize draw (the deadline for entries is Aug. 31). If they read every day for all seven weeks of the summer reading club, they also earn a medal and a certificate. If that's not challenging enough for some eager young readers, they can come to the library each week to pick up an optional challenge bookmark and earn more entries into the grand prize draw.
Teens can pick up a paper copy of the reading record from their local TNRL branch or download a digital copy, then read every day for seven weeks: it's just that easy. Reading records returned by Aug. 31 are entered in a grand prize draw, and there are optional reading challenges that can earn more grand prize entries.
Adults can also take part, so now is a great opportunity to make a dent in that "to be read" pile. Simply pick up a paper copy of the reading record, or download it, then either read every day for the seven weeks of the club or accumulate 49 hours of reading in total: the choice is yours. There are also extra challenges included in the reading record, to help you earn more entries in the grand prize draw.
