Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!
This weekend, May 17 and 18, the 66th Knox Mountain Hill Climb is set to take place in Kelowna.
Racers will speed up the mountain on the 3.5-kilometre track challenged by sharp corners and a steep incline of around 800 feet.
The current hill record is one minute 34.903 seconds held by Aran Cook of Edmonton, Alberta, which he captured in 2023.
Because of the event, the base of Knox Mountain, the Crown Lookout and Knox Mountain Drive will be closed to the public other than ticket holders starting Thursday, May 15 and throughout the Victoria Day long weekend until Monday, May 19.
The Knox Mountain Drive closure starts Thursday as set-up for the event begins while the park will close Friday afternoon.
There will also be parking restrictions in effect:
- Main parking area and Poplar Point Drive parking area: closed from Thursday, May 15 at 6 p.m. until Tuesday, May 20 at noon.
- North side of Broadway Avenue: parking restrictions are in effect from Thursday, May 15 at 5 p.m. until Monday, May 19.
Visitors are advised to follow parking closure signage in the area as construction related to utility improvements in the North End is also ongoing in the area. People are asked to use active transit such as biking, walking and carpooling to attend the event.
Additionally, the Knox Mountain Disc Golf Course will be closed to the public for the weekend starting on Thursday as event campers arrive and the Dog Park will closed for the weekend on Friday.
The event organizers expect park access to be fully available around 12 p.m. on Monday.
