Hwy. 5 south of Barriere closed briefly due to rock slide now reopened - watch for crews

A rock slide 5.3 kilometres south of Barriere temporarily closed Highway 5 in both directions on Thurs. at 9 p.m. until crews from Argo Road Maintenance, the Ministry of Transportation (MoTI) and geotech crews could assess and begin clearing. A rock slide temporarily closed Highway 5 in both directions 5.3 kilometres south of Barriere at 9 p.m. Feb. 1 according to the Ministry of Highways (MoTI) and Argo Road Maintenance. Crews on scene are advising motorists to check drivebc.ca for further updates.

As of 10:07 p.m. Highway 5 is reopened to alternating, slow moving traffic. DriveBC advises motorists to ‘watch for crews’ working. Argo crews are on site and have coordinated with the MoTI operations team and geotechnical experts. According to MoTI, contrary to initial reports, the situation is less severe than anticipated and they confirm it originated from a smaller slope than initially reported. Enhanced patrols will continue overnight as a precaution and the Ministry of Transportation will keep DriveBC updated once the highway is cleared.
