Drivers planning to use Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon are advised that there will be an overnight closure on the highway from midnight to 4 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20 at Tank Hill, 14 kilometres east of Lytton.
The closure will allow crane movements at Tank Hill, where work is ongoing to build a highway overpass above the CPKC mainline. The site was badly impacted during the November 2021 flooding in the region, and a temporary at-grade highway crossing has been in place there since early 2022.
During the May 20 closure, crews will be repositioning a crane to continue girder and deck panel installation on the new bridge.
Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon will be closed for 36 kilometres in both directions from midnight until 4 a.m. on May 20. Checkpoints will be set up at Lytton and Spences Bridge to provide travellers with information about alternative routes. The closures will be in place at the intersections of Highway 1 and Highway 12 (Lytton), and Highway 1 and Highway 8 (Spences Bridge).
Drivers are advised that Highway 8 from Spences Bridge to Merritt is not available as a detour route during the closure.
While regular vehicles will not be permitted through the closure area during the stoppage, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit is working directly with emergency services to facilitate access for emergency vehicles through the site during this time.
The Gladwin area and Nicomen River Road will remain accessible to local traffic. All other traffic will be detoured via Highway 12 and Highway 5. Traffic-control guidance will be provided through portable message boards in Lillooet and Ashcroft. Drivers travelling between the Interior and Lower Mainland can take Highway 3 or Highway 5 as alternative routes.
For up-to-date information about this closure, as well as road conditions on alternative routes, travellers should monitor the weather forecast and visit www.drivebc.ca.
