A high-risk sex offender has been charged in connection with a sexual assault at the Gateway SkyTrain station in April.
On the evening of April 18, around 9 p.m., a 17-year-old girl got off the train and was followed by the suspect. As she walked along the platform, a man allegedly groped her, according to a Metro Vancouver Transit Police news release on Thursday, June 19.
"He fled the station after she approached other passengers for help," noted a Metro Vancouver Transit Police news release Thursday.
Hayden McCorriston, 30, was identified as a suspect and arrested. He remains in custody until his next court appearance.
“Everyone has the right to arrive at their transit destination safely, and without the fear of harassment or assault. Thanks to this young woman’s quick thinking, officers were able to conduct investigative steps that identified the suspect and make an arrest,” Const. Amanda Steed said in the release.
In April, the Vancouver Police Department issued a Canada-wide warrant for McCorriston, who went missing from his halfway house. He had been released on statutory release the day before. After a member of the public recognized him and alerted police, he was re-arrested.
He was convicted of several sexual assaults against strangers in 2022.
