Rocks seen on Lake Country's Oyama Road Friday weren't due to a landslide, according to the district.
During heavy rain late Friday afternoon, June 20, the road's ditches saw a large flow of water off of side slopes that overwhelmed their banks and washed debris from the shoulders on the lower section of MP Williams Hill, the district said in a social media update following concerns shared by motorists.
District staff confirmed the roadway wasn't undercut, noting there is asphalt all the way along the ditch to keep it armoured.
The district's roads team cleared the debris from the road Friday.
"During such significant rain storms as we saw today, please watch for gravel on roads, adjust your driving to the conditions, and report any concerns to the after hours roads line: 250-317-9870," the district said.
The district added that rockfalls do occur from time to time, saying they are a "natural process and cannot always be prevented." It said when rockfalls happen, the district and its contractors "spring into action" to ensure the roadway is cleared and safe for drivers.
"If you see a significant rockfall on any of the roads in the community please do not stop, but get a safe distance beyond the rockfall and call 911 immediately," the district said.
Anyone with concerns about a route they travel that has steep slopes and rock faces can use the district's online report-a-problem service request form to alert the district to any significant changes observed, so that it can give it some extra attention in its monitoring routine.
