Tax notices are expected to be sent out this week for Nanaimo residents.
Municipal taxes will go up 7.8 per cent this year, with one per cent of that a scheduled annual increase for the asset management reserve. The tax increase will equate to approximately $222, or $18.50 per month for the average household's tax bill.
The city also collects separate tax requisitions on behalf of the Regional District of Nanaimo, the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District, the Vancouver Island Regional Library, Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools and B.C. Assessment.
In a press release posted to the city's website on Tuesday, May 13, the city noted that a potential Canada Post strike could delay the arrival of tax notices, and it isn't recommended property owners mail in their tax payments for the same reason. Instead, residents are asked to pay their taxes through their financial institution, which can be done online, over the phone or in-person, or at the city's service and resource centre at 411 Dunsmuir St.
Property owners can access their property tax notice online at http://mycity.nanaimo.ca as early as May 14. Anyone already registered for e-mail notifications through MyCity will receive their tax notice on May 16.
Property taxes must be paid by July 2.
The deadline for eligible property owners to apply for the home owner grant is also July 2, which, if accepted, reduces the amount of property taxes they pay at their principal residence.
