Barriere RCMP report a variety of calls for service recently, including a break and enter, a motorcycle crash along Highway 5, and a single vehicle crash resulting in an immediate roadside prohibition.
On Aug. 3, Barriere RCMP received a call about a break and enter into a recreational vehicle (RV) located at Bush Creek Forest Services Road, north of Chase. The registered owner parked his RV at that location and then drove into Kamloops for the night. When he returned, he found that the door had been pried open and several items were missing.
Cpl. Kyle Camalush, detachment commander for the Barriere RCMP, says that a propane tank, a furnace, a Yeti cooler, and a television were among the missing items. The owner filed a report with the RCMP, then immediately removed his RV from the area.
On Aug. 4, a motorcycle collision occurred on Highway 5 near the antique store in Louis Creek. “RCMP responded and met the ambulance from Barriere on site," says Camalush. "Paramedics prepared to transport the driver of the motorcycle, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, to the hospital. The officer on scene spoke to a witness who indicated that the motorcycle pulled out to pass an RV, then pulled back in and lost control, subsequently causing a collision.”
At approximately 8 p.m. on Aug. 4, police conducted patrols northbound on Highway 5 and came across a single motor vehicle collision near Allen Meeker Road. “The vehicle was partially in the ditch and all of the air bags had been deployed," says Camalush. "The male on scene admitted to being the driver. After speaking with the male for several minutes, it was determined that he was either intoxicated or possibly injured.” Camalush adds that after speaking with the male for several minutes, it was determined that he was either intoxicated or possibly injured, and the officer on scene noted two empty liquor cans at the foot of the driver's seat.
“The Alcohol Screening Device demand was read to the driver and two tests were subsequently administered with both resulting in ‘fail’ readings,” says Camalush. The vehicle was towed to a nearby tow yard and an Immediate Roadside Prohibition was issued.
On Aug. 4 at 11:12 p.m., Barriere RCMP received a call complaining about roaming dogs attacking residents at the Armour Road Trailer Park. The complainant stated that two huskies surrounded him and started to leap at him. He was not bitten, but had to kick and throw rocks at the dogs to protect himself.
"Police explained that Barriere did not have a Dangerous Dog Bylaw and thus police did not have authority to react to such an incident," says Camalush. "He was advised that he had the right to protect himself within reason from the dogs and to contact his landlord with a complaint.” RCMP also advised that another option would be to contact the SPCA and ask them to conduct checks on the pets and the pet owner.
On Aug. 7, Barriere RCMP received a call from from someone stating that they had purchased a hot tub from SpaBerry (located in Calgary) in November of 2023 but still had not received the product. A Visa number was provided over the phone to a ‘Jeff Knight’ and the caller received a receipt for their purchase.
The shipment was said to have been delayed due to errors in shipping, and the purchaser has since learned that they had been defrauded, but that they would have to file a police report in Calgary. Camalush adds that the complainant was directed to contact the Better Business Bureau as well as the credit card company in an effort to retrieve the payment.
