It’s time for the annual Raise a Reader fundraiser once again and Barriere and area literacy outreach coordinator, Jill Hayward, is looking forward to the 2024 programs.
“The programs we offer for youth literacy initiatives in the Barriere area from McLure to Little Fort, include some really enjoyable family events each year supporting literacy in our communities," Hayward said. "The work we do is under the umbrella of Decoda Literacy Solutions, the official B.C. Literacy organization that works with the provincial government in reporting and funding literacy initiatives throughout the province.”
This year the programs will includes the annual Teddy Bear Picnic, Books for Babies, Barriere Blooms Youth Gardening Division, supporting the Barriere Library Story Walk in Fadear Park, T.V. Players Theatre Camp for Youth, Literacy Week youth events, Breakfast with Santa and “much more” said Hayward.
"All funds raised during Raise a Reader week stay in the community to assist with numerous youth literacy programs and free tutoring for youth. We are working closely with the Thompson Nicola Regional District Library in Barriere to enhance literacy in our area.”
The fundraiser is hoping to attract local volunteers willing to donate a few hours on Wednesday, Sept. 25 within the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to assist in this worthwhile literacy fundraising initiative.
“We would greatly appreciate your local support for youth literacy in the valley," Hayward added. "I’m hoping those who wish to donate, or volunteer will call me for more information. We will be out and about in downtown Barriere on Wednesday welcoming all donations that contribute to keeping this important initiative for children and families going in our area.”
