Cultural stigmas can often be associated with autism in the South Asian community, which is why awareness and acceptance for the condition is the aim of an upcoming Surrey event.
The Autism Support Network is organizing its second annual South Asian Gala, which is set for November with tickets on sale today (April 2) on World Autism Awareness Day.
For the second year in a row, the event is aimed at raising awareness about autism in the South Asian community in the hopes of building acceptance for the developmental condition, a press release states.
"South Asian families often face cultural stigma and barriers to services," it continues, adding that the Autism Support Network, led by parents of autistic children and adults, provides free and personalized support to families.
With a price tag of $150 per person and $1,500 for a table of eight, the funds raised through ticket sales and donations will go towards supporting initiatives in the organization for early diagnosis, access to services and increased community knowledge on autism, ASN states.
Set for Nov. 8 at the Royal King Palace and Convention Centre in Surrey with a 6 p.m. start time, the event is anticipated to have more than 300 businesses, community leaders, other supporters and volunteers in attendance.
