Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, was pleased to present the MP Youth Awards for 2017 on Canada Day.

“The MP Youth Awards recognize outstanding young volunteers in our community,” MP McLeod said. “This year, I had the honour to present awards to Risa Murdoch and Sara Kate Smith (pictured).”

Risa Murdoch is a leader in her elementary school’s composting program, and has trained and educated her fellow students on the importance of waste reduction. She has also built a stepping stone path on school grounds that features inspirational quotes; and operates a lemonade stand with proceeds going to the SPCA’s Kamloops Branch, an organization where she helps locate lost dogs.

Sarah Kate Smith, of Barriere, is a dedicated volunteer with the 4H foundation. Within that, she founded Speak Out Loud, a three-day professional development conference where youth are taught to become skilled and engaged leaders. She also gave a TED X talk on the importance of millennials in the future of agriculture.

“The MP Youth Awards recognize the very best young leaders in our community, leaders who help others and inspire positive change,” said McLeod. “This year’s winners are ambitious young people who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to important causes.”

“We had many strong candidates apply this year and I’d like to thank all the applicants for all their hard work. The future is bright for so many young people in our region,” McLeod concluded.
