A visitor to the city’s adopt-a-pet day gets to know a shelter dog.

Dogs, cats, and small creatures were up for adoption May 3 and 4 in Surrey.

The Surrey Animal Resource Centre held a no-cost open house over the weekend and found homes for 15 animals.

More than 150 people visited the centre—a city-owned shelter located in Cloverdale—for the adoption event. The city held the open house in an effort to free up space at the shelter, which is running at capacity.

Mayor Brenda Locke attended the adopt-a-pet day. She said each adoption is a “joyful” start for both families and their new pets.

“The outpouring of love we saw during the adoption event was remarkable," the mayor said in a city press release. “I am deeply thankful to our community for showing such enthusiasm and compassion at this event.”

Locke said that by finding homes for the animals in the shelter, the adoptions helped create bonds between the families and the animal, which enriches both their lives.

“Let's keep the spirit of love and kindness alive as we work to give every pet the forever home they deserve,” she added.

Five cats, five dogs and five rabbits were adopted over the May 3-4 weekend. Twenty-eight animals are still waiting to be adopted: 14 dogs, 7 cats, and 7 “small animals,” the release noted.

Ashley Allen, manager of the Surrey Animal Resource Centre, said if anyone is looking for a new pet, they can contact the centre.

“We still have so many wonderful animals available for adoption,” Allen said. “We’d love to help you find the right fit for you and see some of our long-term residents finally find loving new homes.”

Anyone interested in a new pet can visit the Surrey Animal Resource Centre Facebook page to see a list of adoptable animals. For more info on the adoption process, visit the city’s website at surrey.ca.

“The shelter encourages anyone considering adoption to visit the resource centre and explore the animals waiting for their forever homes,” the release noted. “Together, the community can continue making a difference for Surrey’s homeless animals.”

The Surrey Animal Resource Centre is located in Cloverdale at 17944 Colebrook Road.
