The Escort
Watching On Golden Pond the movie with Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda for the umpteenth time has me thinking once again. I always seem to learn something new, see something I hadn't noticed before even if I've watched a classic multiple times.
Much like when you drive the same roads over and over and suddenly notice a home, tree or amazing structure that you'd never noticed before but now will never forget.
I talk to my grandkids about these types of enlightening experiences. "Watch for the new things you may have missed! It will amaze and puzzle you! How many times have I passed by this and didn't notice that it was there?"
There's always something new to see in life.
Years ago a significant memory I hold dear were some beautiful canoe trips on Heffley Lake just outside of Kamloops with my canine BF girlfriend Nessie, a beautiful golden lab now gone. She was my bestie at the time and we swam, canoed and danced alone together at the lake as best friends do. I would share my dreams and woes with her and I knew she loved me unconditionally and always understood.
As we paddled along on the quiet secluded little lake back in those days, we'd often hear the call of the loons. Eventually a pair, would pop up nearby and surprisingly Nessie just peacefully watched them, our escorts. Sometimes I'd sing softly and they would stay with us as we glided along. One day on one of our many water adventures around the lake, the pair popped up, but not together as usual, one on either side. I guess even loons have differences of opinions, need space or just time to do their own thing. I decided I'd never forget that moment. A gift with the escorts on either side, Nessie and I enjoying their company as we all travelled along together.
The next weekend we set out on our paddle over the smooth water of the lake and heard our friends, the loons, calling once again. Watching and waiting to see if we'd get a glimpse of our tuxedoed companions. Nearer to the far undeveloped shoreline we spotted her, with a tiny brown baby, all fluffy and soft looking sticking close. Stopping to float we watched as Momma and baby continued on knowing trust was also floating across the waters between us.
I'll never forget that moment in time with our escort and her new little babe, it was a reminder like many in life to cherish the moments, look for the unexpected surprises and trust that no matter what is going on in the world or our daily lives, there is always something inspiring to give us hope for a new day ahead.
