The Toonie-A-Day Summer Camp for youngsters age five to eight held at the Barriere Ridge July 4 - 7 was “awesome” and a grand success, according to Barriere Literacy Outreach Co-ordinator (LOC) Jill Hayward.
“We were very happy to once again be able to offer our summer Toonie-A-Day Camps,” said Hayward, “We had 17 youngsters turn out for four days of great fun, and two slightly older participants who also had a super time and were a big help as well.”
Hayward says camp facilitator Judy Armstrong, and her daughter Seanna Nickel, “did a great job over the four days, offering an amazing list of games, learning opportunities, creating crafts with the youngsters to take home, and just generally having a whole bunch of fun with all the participants.”
All four days were filled with activities related to nature and science. Participants learned how to make giant bubbles, crystal shapes, rubber balls, elephant toothpaste, create a bookmark, make an owl on tree bark, played ‘pin the leaf on the tree’, and even had a scavenger hunt with a nature theme. Every child who participated went home with a brand new book (for the bookmark they made to use in it) courtesy of Barriere Literacy.
Hayward said the camp was made possible by dollars raised in the annual Raise-A-Reader fundraiser for Barriere Literacy held each September in the community.
“Thanks to the generosity of residents and organizations within our local communities, Barriere Literacy can continue to offer these programs for our young people to enjoy and learn in safe and fun environments,” said the LOC.
“Our next youth event will be the end of this month when we partner with Thompson Valley Players in hosting a five day Theatre Camp for youth aged 9-14.”
